This past weekend, the polar vortex storm dumped a few inches of snow in our area. When it was over, I noticed many birds flying around in our backyard. There were several dozens juncos hopping on the snow, hunting for food. They had emptied our bird feeder and we had no more sunflower seeds left to restock it.
One of the birds was a turtle dove, also called mourning dove. I think it was thirsty because it kept eating snow and managed to clear a 3-foot section of snow off the handrail of our deck.

She is beautiful. I think we have mourning doves around here too but I didn’t realize that they are also called turtle doves. Learn something new everyday! 🙂

That’s a lot of snow for a little turtle dove to consume 🙂 Beautiful capture!

Thanks, Amy. I was also surprised at the amount of snow that disappeared. I kept looking for another dove, because they usually travel in pairs, but I did not see any.

I am a bird watcher…and I noticed a flurry of activity in our backyard the morning following our record low temperature…so before heading off to work I took them a little snack. Your photo is beautiful!

Thank you for stopping by, and from now on I will need to remind myself to always keep bird food on hand before a storm like this last one.
