common tern, laughing gull, photography, postaday, ring-billed gull, sandpipers, wed-winged blackbird
Today a friend and I went to the southernmost part of New Jersey on the Delaware Bay. It was too early for the annual coming ashore of the horseshoe crab, which will happen in about two weeks. So we walked on the beach and I was able to take my first best shot of the red-winged blackbird, which some say is the most common bird in North America.
There were also other birds of course, such as sandpipers, gulls, and terns.
Sandpipers are small birds, not much bigger than sparrows, but the terns and gulls were larger.
The common tern is noticeable by its short feet.

I really enjoyed your photos Hien, but especially the red-winged blackbird and the tern. You have such clarity in your photos. I like that stretch of the east coast for its abundance in birds, and look forward to the horseshoe crabs you await.

Thanks Jet. I will definitely make an effort to go see the annual horseshoe crabs landing on the Delaware Bay beaches.

Beautiful shots of the shorebirds. The Red-winged Blackbird may be common, but he’s very wary and I’ve never gotten a very good shot.

This is why my new camera comes in handy. It allows me to shoot from quite a distance so as not to scare the birds away. I’ve tried to photograph blackbirds before without much success.

I wonder that the tern can actually stand ! – it looks far too big for those little legs and feet ! And what is that crow doing standing in the water ???

The tern looks ludicrous on its feet, but it is beautiful when it is soaring in the air. The blackbird is smaller than a crow. This one was digging for food on the beach, competing with the sandpipers.

Isn’t that pretty unusual – a crow having its feet in the water ?

M.R., it goes where it can find food. Don’t we all, unless we are on a diet, and even then?
