For a long time, I’ve tried to photograph woodpeckers living in the woods behind our house. I can hear them drumming somewhere from time to time, or see them making a fast swoop at the bird feeder. Recently, I’ve discovered seed bells that seem to be very attractive to them. This past week, I hung one near our deck and sure enough the woodpeckers came, the whole family:

Alas, the seed bell barely lasted 3 days. The squirrels found a way to get at it, and it was gone by the morning of the third day.

I’m almost surprised that they will eat stuff without having to drill trees for it ! 🙂 Did they really eat the whole thing ? – the beautiful little GREEDIES !!! 😀

You should see them! They were drilling into the seed bell as if it were a tree. There were also other birds, such as chickadee, tufted titmouse, and a couple of voracious squirrels that we had to keep chasing away. When we woke up yesterday, the seed bell was gone, and I think the squirrels finally figured how to unhook it from its hanger.

People in the countries with squirrels spend a large proportion of their time trying to work out ways to get rid of ’em so as to leave stuff out for birdies. Dunno that anyone ever has, so far … Those pied woodpeckers are DIVINE, Hien ! 😀
