Yesterday, at the Edwin B Forsythe Wildlife Refuge, I saw a new bird, for me anyway. It was an Eastern Kingbird, a fierce defender of its territory with a crown that it only exposes when confronting intruders. When it saw my friends and I approach, it sounded some warnings, but in the end it decided we were not a threat. It turned its back to us.
On second thought, it decided to keep an eye on us. It turned around and watched us for quite a while as we went through our antics of taking pictures.
