Big black ants found the old hummingbird feeder soon enough, and they had quite a good time in its sugary water. So I had to buy a new feeder, one with a moat that I coated with glue to stop the ants from crawling into the feeder. It worked, the ants did not come back, and here are some photos of the male ruby throated hummingbird feeding from it.
If you look carefully at the above picture, you can see the hummingbird tongue reaching all the way down to the bottom of the feeder.
OM ! What a stunning series of photos ! I love the feeder and how our feather friend .feels comfortable in them !!!

These will be my last hummingbird photos for this year. They have flown to warmer climates, similar to where you live. Thanks for visiting, Doda.

I have the same kind of feeder. Little birds like Chickadees and Goldfinches like to drink water from the ant moat.

I don’t have any water in there, unless it is rain water, and so far have not see any bird trying to drink from the moat. Thank you for your comment.

WUNDERBAR, Hien ! – good on you for sorting out the solution. About which, by the way, I remain curious: where did the glue go in relation to the moat ???

M-R, the feeder hangs by a rod with a hook at one end. At the other end, the rod is anchored into the middle of the moat. I coated the entire side of the moat with glue. The only way for ants, and other insects, to get to the sugary water is to crawl down the rod and across the moat, where they get stuck and trapped by the glue.
