Driving through California’s Central Valley I saw miles and miles of fruit and nut trees, as well as rows of lettuce and other vegetables stretching to the horizon. There were signs complaining that last year the federal government cut off water supply to California farmers in order to protect the endangered Delta Smelt, a small fish about 2 inches long. A few days ago NASA predicted that the state’s water supply will run out in 2016. What will become of the farmers then? Where will the nation get those oranges, cherries, pistachios, almond, vegetables and other produce from?
I am certainly no expert on these issues, but this is what I saw last week around Hollister, CA.
So sad and scary to think of water actually running out. Hopefully a solution can be found.

Thanks Sue. I am sure some solution will be found. There are enough bright people living in California who can figure it out. ๐

Hello again, clever photog. ! ๐
That doesn’t LOOK very drought-stricken; but Debra of “Breathe Lighter” has written of terrible water shortages in California, so I know it happens and will happen again.
We can only PRAY that the relevant governments take all possible steps – i.e., desalination plants, etc. – to guard their constituents …

Thanks M-R! They haven’t reached the desalination plant stage yet. Swimming pools are still full. ๐

Whereas here in NSW we have an ENORMOUS desal. plant that isn’t used at all. Go figure. :-\

Beautiful shots and a sad story for us in SoCal. We need more rain and a better conservation plan. People are still in denial…

Thanks, Amy! Southern California is the region with a severe drought problem. Northern California is not doing so badly. I was amazed by the green hills I saw there, but maybe they will turn brown again in a few months.

Thanks Helen. Northern California got a lot of rain this winter so the drought may not be too bad, but Southern California (think oranges) still faces a severe drought, so they say.
