Yesterday, driving toward the end of Wildlife Drive at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, I saw this Osprey perched on top of her nest.
A photographer who had been there since sunrise told me that the Osprey was part of a pair at the nest. They had breakfast earlier, and then he had flown away somewhere. The gentleman told me that he was due back “soon”, and as he said that I saw the male Osprey flying toward the nest. We both clicked away with our cameras, but I was not expecting to take the following kind of photos.
Total elapsed time: 12 seconds.

I remember the first time I saw birds doin’ the “wild thing” and it was such a surprise. Eggs to follow and cute hatchlings. Will you be able to follow this nest? Be fun to watch the chicks grow and fledge. I love that.

This nest is 80 miles from where I live so it will not be easy to follow. By the way, I got a speeding ticket when I went there this time, and everyone tells me I am a slow driver!

Good but unplanned timing, Randall. If I had not stopped and talked to the other photographer I would have missed the opportunity.

Wow! Wonderful pictures of Ospreys starting a family! In June they’ll have little ones, I guess 🙂 Our Sandy was also first at the nest, and then supervised the nest remodeling. I’m sure she’ll do the same. Wonderful that they have the perch right there. [My lens is a different one, up to 1200mm zoom, but I only need to zoom it out when shooting the osprey nest 2 blocks away from my terrace …and should be using the tripod 🙂 ]

Looks like your Ospreys a head start on ours, by at least a couple of weeks. Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Tiny!

Thank you Amy. It’s a good lens, and I am glad I took the chance to purchase and use it without anyone having reviewed it. 🙂

I think it was mentioned in perhaps the last post or second last one. She was leaning from her 14th floor balcony with this huge lens and camera in hand trying to get a shot of baby Osprey. Fascinating reporting I have been reading over there from the Salt Marsh. (smile)

I just re-read that post. She mentions a 1200 mm zoom lens. Mine is only 600 mm. Maybe she has a different lens, or is using a 2X extender with a zoom lens.

My mistake then, Neihtn. I thought it was 600mm. I cannot even image a 1200mm zoom lens. The thing must be huge. I didn’t even know they made lenses that powerful. And here I have is a 300mm. LOL Have fun with your 600mm. My 300mm is a handful for me!
