The male Ruby-throated Hummingbird has the red throat while his female counterpart has a mostly white throat. Yesterday he was not around, at least I did not see him, and a young female, very slender and graceful, came to the feeder. She allowed me to come within 10 ft (3 m) of her to take these pictures.

generally, I find the female hummingbirds of any species to be much more approachable than the males. it’s almost like the males don’t want photos of their lovely gorgets and crowns! 🙂

My neighbor installed a birdfeeder on her deck. Within seconds, I saw birds coming. How do they know it’s a birdfeeder? Amazing! 😉

Thanks Helen. Backyard birds are used to humans, and perhaps have become too dependent on bird feeders that we hang out for them. In my case, whenever I run out of seeds, the birds fly around, land on nearby branches, look distraught and not too subtly remind me to go get some more for them!
