At this time of the year, our Southern Magnolia (Magnolia Grandilora) trees produce flowers as big as dinner plates and as white as the finest china. This morning I took the following photos of one flower and rendered it in both color and monochrome. Let me know which one you prefer by using the voting buttons at the end of this post.

Gorgeous shots, both of them. But I prefer the one with color, simply because there are such beautiful hues apart from white and green.

At this point most people prefer the color version also. Thanks Tiny!

Both are fabulous! As big as dinner plates? Wow that must be amazing to see in person.

Thank you Sue! When fully opened these flowers are about a foot or 30 cm in diameter.

The Red undercolour of leaves gives a stunning contrast to the white, lifting it up. In the b/w photo this element is lost, but another element comes into focus. the lift up seems more tender. I vote black and white..Yin and Yang!

Good morning, Hien. I voted for color. I look at the color one first. Then stare at the black and white one. If I miss the color, that means I like color better. If I don’t miss color, that means I like black and white better. That’s the way I make a decision now. π

Thanks Helen. Your way is a good way to decide. I’ll have to try it!
