Great Blue Herons are large enough birds that I found it relatively easy to photograph them in flight. Here are some photos I took at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge a few days ago. They are of three different herons.
All of the above herons flew only short distances to position themselves at a different fishing spot. They probably never went higher than 20 ft (6 m) above the surface of the pond.

Thank you Inese! I think most of us would take photos of these herons, especially when they are in flight.

These are great shots! It is true in my experience too, that these herons are easier to photograph in flight relative to smaller birds, but by no means easy 🙂

Thanks Tiny! There were so many of them that day that I could just point my camera and take the shots. Luckily most of them turned out all right.

These are beautiful, Hien. We have herons here in sunny FL, but I don’t believe I have ever captured them as wonderfully as you have.

Lois, this time there were many of these birds, and I was partially hidden by bushes and trees, so I was able to take these photos without scaring them away. Maybe they were also hungry after a cold morning, and didn’t care too much about harmless people hovering around the pond. Anyway, enjoy and thank your for commenting.
