If you wonder why these birds are called Double-crested Cormorants, look at the following photo taken at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.

The two crests that the bird sports are only visible during breeding season, which is right now. Once breeding season is over, it will revert back to looking like the young Cormorant below, although adults would be much darker in color.
