Yesterday, near the beginning of Wildlife Drive at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, I saw Canada Geese and Snowy Egrets sharing a small area of the pond. I stopped for a few minutes to take pictures of the egrets.
Suddenly a cacophony of honking and water splashing rose up. I turned my camera in the geese direction and shot the following photos. What happened was that a gander was trying to invade the turf of another who had a female goose by his side. If you don’t like violence, don’t look at the following shots.
When calm returned, he escorted her out of the area.
Meanwhile the other gander put up some face-saving moves.
Then he had to cool off his hot face.

Amazing series! Geese are so territorial – and they have a terrible, bruising bite. I’ve even had one attack our car as it was passing very slowly by his family as they grazed next to the road. Tough dudes!

Brilliant images! I saw almost similar scene on the lake near to our home just a couple days ago. I wished I bring my camera..even then, perhaps I was not fast enough, they moved so fast! You did great job!

Indah, they say the best camera to have is the one you carry with you. Never leave home without one! 🙂

Having seen this happen numerous times, I can say that you did an excellent job of capturing it. What I find amazing is how the other birds ignore all the fussing and fighting as the geese go at it, like the egret in the background of several of your photos.

Thank you! You are so very observant, Jerry! Throughout it all, the Snowy Egrets barely budged and very nonchalantly continued their fishing.
