At the height of summer, a trip to the lotus pond near our home has become an annual event for me. The pond is not too large but well maintained, endowed with many white and pink lotus flowers. There are plenty of shade trees around it to protect photographers from the sun and the heat. This morning, at the golden hour I went there and “owned” the pond for a half hour before others arrived. All of the flowers were white, as the pink ones usually bloom as much as two weeks later.
For the following photos I used two Canon lenses: a 180 mm macro lens and a 400 mm lens, both reputed to be among the sharpest lenses with excellent colors.
There is something so peaceful and beautiful with the lotus flower…the petals on the water is a view/character I have never seen presented so. Wonderful shot.

Thank you! Where you are the lotus ponds must be larger and filled with plants.

Very nice post Hien. This appears to be a good site for close work and I’m glad you had it to yourself for awhile. I love the “line” in those petal images.

Thank you Nick! That pond is only about 3 miles from home, and not too many people know about it, yet.

The White Lotus has an innate beauty. You’ve captured it well. Love the floating leaf shots.

They’re all beautiful, but I really like the lighting in the fourth photo of the lotus.
The 400 mm lens is the one that I was going to buy when I made the switch from Nikon to Canon, and there are times that I wish I had stuck to my plan. If it would focus closer than 11 feet, I’d have bought it in a heartbeat. You’ve certainly proved how sharp it is.

Thank you Jerry. That 400 mm really began to shine when I got the 6D as my first full-frame camera. You are right about that close focusing limit. For some of these flowers I had to walk backward a few feet before they came into focus. 🙂
