Its has been very hot lately, so I did not try to go out to take photos of anything. However, going through my archives, I found some images of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park. Using my new DxO software I reprocessed the raw files to get the following photos, taken at sunrise one day in October of 2012.

The second image was taken less than a minute after the first one, just as the morning sun forcefully broke through the clouds. It was the most spectacular sight I had ever witnessed.

Thank you! If you go, you need to be there at sunrise when the first rays of the rising sun touch the dunes, illuminating them and nothing else.

It is endlessly fascinating how much the light can change in just a few moments. It’s so hard to know, sometimes, when to stop waiting for it to present that special opportunity that we hope for. At least our patience does pay off some of the time. Lovely work, Hien.

Lois, one minute made all the difference. Once the clouds parted to let the sun come through unfiltered, the light became more vibrant and the objects that it illuminated came to life.
