Sunflowers are a perennial favorite of late summer. Their name implies that they are sun worshipers that track and turn to face the sun. However, once they are fully mature, they are resolutely turned to the East as you can see in the second photo shown below.

Beautiful shots. The colours are so vibrant. I like the angle you chose to shoot them from.

Thanks! The plants were about 12 ft high, and I had no choice but to aim high. 🙂

Beautiful shots Hien, I’m partial to the second with the supporting buds all around the main head. Sunflowers are gorgeous and amazing flowers. Been out mending a hurt shoulder, hoping to be back in next week or so – computer typing is a challenge.

Thanks Mary! I hope your shoulder will not hurt too much and that it will be back to normal soon. Can you still paint?

Hi Hien, thank you so much for your kind thoughts. Who knew that shoulder muscles can be so troublesome. I’ve not been able to paint, but am hoping to get going again as the week progresses.

Good morning, Hien. Interesting note. I thought they face the sun all the time until they turn brown. 😉 Thanks.

That’s what I thought, but then I began noticing that in my photos, the mature sunflowers were not following the sun. Heliotropism, or rather phototropism, only applies to the younger plants, before the flowers appear.
