Upon seeing a gull fly by at Barnegat, I instinctively raised my camera and took a shot. Later, when I looked at the following photo, at first I couldn’t figure out what that roundish object was. Finally it dawned on me that it was a clam that a juvenile Ring-billed Gull had just dropped after it had fished it out of the ocean.

Thank you Angela. Gulls do provide many great photo ops, and there are always some around even when other birds have disappeared.

Great capture! I’ve often seen gulls breaking shells by dropping them repeatedly on rocks. A tricky proposition, as they can easily be stolen by another opportunistic gull.

I;ve also seen gulls do what you describe. However, this one dropped it over water, so I wonder if it was unintentional. 🙂
