Last week at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware I saw for the first time a pair of Black-necked Stilt. They are graceful birds with long legs and striking colors that stand out from a distance. They don’t usually come to the Northeast, staying normally much further South, so it was a real treat.
Second only to Flamingos, these birds have the longest legs in proportion to their bodies, as you can see in the following photo when one of them stood next to a Lesser Yellowlegs which has pretty long legs also.
Reblogged this on The East Coast Life…With Style.

Beautiful captures of the Black-necked Stilt, Hien! I saw the bird alerts they were at Bombay, but I never got the chance to get over there and try my luck at photographing them.

Beautiful shots, I love stilts – I only got to see them recently, in California. Hoping to see more at some point, since they do show up in Washington sometimes.

They are on the West Coast, in California, and in Washington but way from the coastline for some reason. I hope you will see some again.

Beautiful birds. However I must wonder why they are so far “off-course”? Changing weather patterns?
Glad you got the chance to see them.

I don’t know why they were off course. It could have been the storms we’ve been having, but who knows. Thanks for stopping by and commenting,

Great shots. Don’t Blue Herons have long legs, too?

Herons have long legs too, Katelon. A quote from allaboutbirds.org: Black-necked Stilts “have the second-longest legs in proportion to their bodies of any bird, exceeded only by flamingos.”

Thank you Eliza! You probably have many more of this bird on the West Coast, right?

Typo -‘Hien!’

Sorry about that (thinking you were on the West Coast)! And that typo of my name is very common among English speaking people, something to do about e before i…
