The male Red-winged Blackbird is easily recognized by his red and yellow shoulder patches and his propensity to sing for any reason from the top of reeds or bushes. I saw the one pictured below at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland more than a week ago. He was not shy, stood his ground, and continued serenading even as my car came nearer to him.

Beautiful captures, Hien! I have never spot one here in Texas. ๐

Thanks Amy. They like marshlands so you may have to go to one to find them in Texas.

This one is also a North American bird, one of the “most abundant” to quote allaboutbirds.org. They are very territorial and will defend their area against any bird or human, no matter what size.

I was at Blackwater and boy there are a lot of RWings there! It’s a joy to watch them sing their song. I tried my luck at capturing a few, hopefully something decent and in focus will be good enough for one of my upcoming posts! ๐

You need to find one that refuses to move from his perch and keep singing no matter what. ๐

I await their return every spring as they announce the end of winter! Great shots, Hien.

I love these birds Hien – never saw one until we moved to Maine and there were quite a few perched outside at a near by pond. Their song is one that I loved hearing, we’ve had some visit here in Texas, but nothing compared to the chorus in Maine. Great post and beautiful shots.

They are one of the most common birds in North America and can be found in every state, including Texas. They like to be near water, including marshes, so you may find more of them in those areas. Thanks for commenting, Mary!
