BIF, great egret, hummingbird, photography, postaday, saegull
Most of us are fascinated by photos of birds in flight (BIF), probably one of the hardest kinds of photography. Ever since I started to become serious in photography five years ago, I have occasionally attempted to shoot BIF pictures, most of the time with disappointing results. I still have a long way to go, but over the past few months I have kept the following photos to post.
The birds shown above are relatively large and easy to photograph. The hardest one, for me anyway, is the tiny but very fast Hummingbird.
Fascinating images! love these! I originally focused on portraiture & street photography but started photographing birds & wildlife (for just over a year now) and totally hooked! I am still trying to get my own perfect flying heron shot! If I can get one half as good as yours I would be happy!

Great job nailing the focus on this post and one after. Did you use auto or manual focus?

Thank you. I almost always use autofocus. The birds always fly too fast for manual focus.

Nice, I’m assuming you have figured the best focus point config for capturing birds in flight. I’m often disappointed with out of focus birds in flight, but think I’m getting closer. Just need more experience with the various auto focus settings on my Nikon.

Excellent photos. Yes, it’s hard to take BIF. I have a couple hummingbirds in my backyard, and I did take a few good one. They are gray color, not as pretty as yours.

Thank you Miriam! Sometimes, you also need good lighting to have the colors come out well.

Yes, that’s true. One time I took a photo of an island, when I clicked, a bird flew in front of me. I wasn’t focusing on the bird, so the bird came out dark.

Beautiful photos, Hien. I had tried 5 or 6 times and failed every time. ;-( I need slow moving birds 😉
Good night.

Keep trying, Helen. You also should go to a wildlife refuge like Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. There are many of them all over the country.
