This week a second Nor’Easter dumped heavy snow in our region, with as much as 2 ft (60 cm) in some areas, but much less in coastal areas. I stocked up the bird feeder and many birds braved snow and wind to come during the storm.
Here are some shots of the birds. It was so dark I had to use the flash.

I have never seen a more beautiful starling, wonderful photos, Hien, highlighting the beauty of this much-maligned bird.

You are right, Jet. Somehow this bird is much-maligned, perhaps because they travel in such large groups and eat everything on their path.

I think of using a flash as something to steer clear of, but it really was used to good effect here. The Starlings’ spring plumage is gorgeous. The junco look so cold! Great shot!

Thank you Lynn! I almost never use a flash, but in this case it was just too dark.

That’s why I should consider it next winter – it is often quite dark here on ordinary, overcast days, for months on end!

You are right, and it kept slipping on that metal rod coated with snow.

Lovely shots, Hien! I am sure the birds were grateful to find food in the snow storm.

Thank you Tiny! I try to help a little bit. The snow is slow to melt and spring is only 10 days away.

I’m sure they all appreciated your kindness, Hien. I bet finding food in such conditions would be very hard.

Thank you Dries! Whenever there is a snowstorm, we see a lot of birds around the feeder. Like you wrote, they must not find much to eat when the ground is all white.

Great images, especially the starlings, which are far from my favorite species of bird!
I’ve been thinking about using my flash more often when I can get closer to birds, it really adds to the overall quality of the images if these are an example of what I could expect.

Thank you Jerry! The starlings only come once in a great while, like when there is a snowstorm.
I don’t normally use flash, and only got this one recently. Still trying to figure out how to best use it.
