A Great Blue Heron held in its bill a small fish that it had caught. A Willet had just caught a bigger fish, and flew up right in front of the heron. I was too far and actually did not see this small drama until I got home and displayed the image on my computer monitor. It looks like the Willet was bragging about its catch, and the heron was by no means happy.
Here’s a closer look.

Great click! The heron sure doesn’t look impressed 🙂

Yes, sometimes I catch little scenes on my camera that I didn’t notice with my eyes, but not often. This is a cracker!

I learn so much from your photos, Hien: bragging herons, eagles doing a courtship dance. Fascinating stuff!

I can just tell that this was a tough capture! Good on you for going for it! I too find treasures I honestly did not see when I took a picture. In front of the editing screen my jaw at times drops. Beautiful job, Hien! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thanks Amy! It was tough because I did not use the 7D and a better lens. Those reeds are hard to photograph as a background.

I’ve begun bringing my long lens with me when I have one of my shorter lenses on my camera body. It took me a while to figure out how to do it. Walking for hours with any added weight, over time, gets to be a bit much for me. I have back issues so I have to be very careful how I distribute the weight that I do carry. You did your best and that is all one can ask. You need to pat yourself on the back and say …. At least I didn’t walk away from this. And yeah … the background, if not a good contrast, is tough. I know that in spades!
