In addition to Northern Cardinals, other regular birds at our bird feeder include Carolina Chickadees and two kinds of Woodpeckers. On the same cloudy days that brightly lit the cardinals, I was able to get several good shots of these other birds.
One more photo taken on January 1st, 2019.

Female Downy Woodpecker searching for food. It looks like a sunflower seed left under the bark by another bird or a squirrel.

Excellent photographs of these old favorites! The red filed marks are so clear on the Downy & Flicker, but I also love the first Chickadee photo – every subtle color change is there, and he looks so neat and tidy. 🙂

I love how you captured the light in their eyes. It must be lovely to have such wonderful winter visitors 🙂

Thanks Takami! These visitors make winters more bearable, especially when it snows.

Chickadees are hard to photograph, but this time I was lucky. Thanks Eliza!

Could be our feeder…we put out suet for the woodpeckers

Woodpeckers love suet, but they also like sunflower seeds.

Great photos. I assume the chickadees are members of the tit family. They remind me of coal tits that you might see in the UK.

Coal Tit and Carolina Chickadee belong to the same Tit family and look very similar.

Great shots! I have been trying to photograph chickadees, but they don’t stay still long enough for clear pics like you have.

Those Chickadees fly in, get one seed, then fly out. Fortunately, I planted a magnolia tree near the bird feeder and that’s where many birds stop to wait their turns or to break open the seeds before eating them.

Hah! I’m going to change my photo methods, and try to get the BEFORE they reach the feeder! Thanks!

Love the spot of red on the downy woodpecker! Thank you for sharing the beautiful photos.

Glad you like the photos! That red spot on the back of the head of the woodpecker indicates it is a male bird.

Will make note of that. Usually puzzled with gender of birds. Many thanks.
