There were about a dozen Tundra Swans at the refuge, far away from the road and apart from the larger Mute Swans which are all-year residents. As their name indicates, Tundra Swans migrate from the artic tundra to the Midlantic shore to spend their winters under warmer conditions.
As I began shooting a Tundra Swan was landing.

Chaser seems to have the upper hand.
Oh, oh … Resistance?

Great photos of the swans in action! I’ve never seen tundra or trumpeter swans that aggressive before, unlike mute swans that seem to go at it for no reason at all other than to stay in practice as far as fighting.

I know its sounds daft but I didn’t realise that swans could not “take off” unless they were on water. I discovered this years ago when I found a swan had landed in the middle of a local road near our park. A dog walker (with dog on lead) escorted to swan to the park where the lake was but we could not get him to jump over the one foot fence that surrounds the water. A brave/reckless man then somehow picked up the swan and dropped him onto the water.
