Today, following the example of Eliza Waters (https://elizawaters.com/2019/01/21/brrrr/), I went to Colonial Lake close to home to photograph ice formations. The lake is man-made, capturing water coming from Shabakunk Creek, damming it, then releasing it further downstream back into the same creek.
It was around 20 °F (-6 °C), the lake was completely iced over, but the water underneath had to flow along its usual path.
Volcano on ice?
Ice bells.
Ice cold water.
Ice cover around trees.
Water and ice.
More ice than water.
Shriveled remnant of autumn.
There was a Great Blue Heron nearby, wondering what all the fuss was about.

Even though many of these made me feel cold, I loved them all, the ice formations look beautiful in the sunshine!

It was cold, and windy! I lasted maybe 30 minutes, and was really happy to get back in the car!

I’m living in it again…Spokane. I hope to make it back to CO at some point though as I like the dry snow and sunshine there. I’ve only been here for 3 months and it is gray and rainy more than I like. Plus, I like more snow 🙂

I’ve been through Spokane in warmer months. It’s a large city, but surrounded by nice scenery.

I miss them in a kind of abstract way. Not strongly, because I don’t like the cold, so on balance I’m glad to be away from it. But there is great beauty in snow and ice and weather extremes. What I need to do is to get a vehicle that can take me into the mountains when there’s snow up there, so I will have the best of both worlds. My car is old and not good for rough roads. 🙂

Thank you Emma! Herons and many other birds have no problem maintaining their balance on just one foot. That’s what they do when they are sleeping, with their heads tucked inside their wings.

This New Jersey girl cannot take the cold anymore. The temps are dipping down to the 30’s here in sunny Florida, and you wouldn’t believe how we bundle up! 😀

Thanks. I have noticed two herons along the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore since your post. I guess I just assumed that as many birds as possible would get away from the cold, snow, and ice. 😉

Thank you! It was cold and windy. I was the only human walking around part of the lake. When I came back to my car, the heron was maybe 30 ft away.
