A few days ago, I went to the rookery next to the Welcome Center in Ocean City, NJ. It is quite late in the breeding season and most of the newborn herons, as well as their parents, have migrated. However, a handful were still around for pictures.

Herons are so gallant ~ incredible shots, Hien. My favorite is the Juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron, the first I’ve seen so thank you for this 🙂 You do work magic with your camera and lens.

Thank you Randall! These night herons are some of my favorite birds. They are big enough so you don’t need a long zoom lens, and during the day they tend to be half asleep and not very active, which is very good for photographers.

Great photos again! It’s nice to see the juveniles. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

Thanks Lynn! In New Jersey, these herons are most often seen right next to the welcome center in Ocean City.

I’m not surprised – I used to see them on the old dock pilings at the Staten Island ferry on the S.I. side – that was amazing. :-0

We have enjoyed watching them in OC for the last number of years but in looking for them the other day at the same location, no luck. I hope nothing has happened to them since sadly there seem to be many issues for the migratory birds.

I love night herons Hien, have posted several favorites as well. Your images are stunning. Have never seen them in NJ I must admit. Here in SC they are with us all year which is great for photographers.

The clarity in your photos is impressive, Hien. So wonderful to see these herons up close. I espec. like the third one, pleasing to see the profile of the juvenile yellow-crowned night heron, and its back with the feather pattern, and the clarity of the sea grass. Lovely.

Thank you Jet! These night herons are probably half asleep during the day and just stand there for anyone to photograph, although they do stay away from crowds.

Teenage or juvenile creatures always look slightly useless as they are not fully adult, therefore quite appelaing. Beautiful photos as always.

Indeed, their bright and large eyes, when open anyway, make them look like human teenagers. Thanks, Emma.

I was watching a juvenile crow in my local park this morning. S/he thought I was coming to get him/her and kept flying away down the path by 6 foot, again and again. It made me smile.

I love herons (and egrets). Great shots.
Your juvenile herons look a bit like our juvenile Nankeen Night Herons.
