Around this time of the year, I’ve been going to photograph lotus flowers at a small pond at the Carnegie Center in Princeton, NJ. In previous years the pond used to have beautiful lotus flowers blooming in July and August. This year all the lotus plants have wilted and turned brown as if struck by some disease. The pond looked terrible. Was it some fungal disease that attacked the lotus? Were the plants left to die intentionally? There was no one around to ask questions.
Here are some shots of the flowers I took on July 25, 2020.

Lovely lotus photos from last year. That’s unfortunate to hear this year the lotus flowers seemed to be struck down by something. Maybe it was something in the water, or maybe the weather was not agreeing with them. Maybe someone unintentionally dumped something in the pond and upset the lotus flowers. Or as you said, someone could have sprayed them with the wrong chemical. Quite a few possibilities.

You should have seen all those poor lotus plants, brown and broken, dead. I hope whoever maintains the grounds in that complex will revive the pond. The corporations around it will not let it die like that. Thank you for commenting, Mabel!

Thanks Julie! I hope that whoever maintains the grounds at that complex will revive the lotuses with new plants and better care.

These are beautiful. It’s sad when a flower fails to bloom or is struck by some diesase. I hope they are back next year.

Thanks Emma! The plants are withered, brown, and probably dead. But who knows, maybe they will come back.

Their fate will depend on the humans and corporations occupying the buildings around the pond.

If they are allowed to grow, they could come back, slowly perhaps. But if they were intentionally killed …

How sad… I hope they didn’t use herbicide on the grounds that leached into the pond… what a disaster if that was the case. Beautiful memories in your photos, though.

You could be right. The lotus plants appeared healthy about a month earlier.

Out of curiosity, I wrote to the environmental dept. at PU to ask. I’ll let you know if I hear back from them. (My spouse grew up there and his dad was a alumnus.)

Such a shame, Hien. I wonder if, due to Covid, they have less people to keep up the grounds. I hope you find out what happened.

About a month earlier I had been to the pond and saw the lotus plants. They were all green and apparently healthy, although there were fewer of them than in previous years. I wonder if someone sprayed them with the wrong chemical. Hmm…

That much change in only a month…I think you are right about chemical spray. So awful.
