Yesterday I walked around Colonial Lake, five miles from home, to see what I could photograph during one of the hottest days of the year. An excessive heat warning is in effect until tomorrow evening.
The dragonflies enjoyed the heat.
The primroses were thriving.
The hibiscuses were in full bloom.
There were many ducks, mainly Mallards, with some oddly colored ones mixed in with them.
Monarchs were flying around.
Painted Turtles were sunning on an old tire.

Thank you Takami! Did you get to see any of the Olympics in person?

Tokyo is a bit far from where I live, and given the global situation, we did not watch any of the Olympic-related events in person. Thank you for asking!

Beautiful close up shots all round, Hien. You did great in the warm weather and hopefully it isn’t too warm for you. It sounds a bit extreme weather-wise over there. Really like the dragonfly shot, great spotting and timing, and such clarity in that shot. Again, beautiful š

Thank you Mabel! In the summer temperatures can be ridiculously high, but not for too long. People stay indoors with the AC, and they miss seeing what the outdoors have to offer.

Thanks for taking us along on your warm and summery walk, Hien. Your photos are delightful, and I especially liked the monarch and the bee inside the pink hibiscus.

Thank you Jet! It was warm indeed, and very few people ventured out. So I had the lake almost to myself.

Oh my! What stunning photos – I love the colourful dragonfly and the basking turtles (are they turtles?)

Thanks Emma! They are turtles indeed. At one time I saw as many as a dozen of them basking in the sun, on a half submerged tree trunk.

They might have been terrapins ( I am not sure what the difference is) I suppose.

Such vibrantly colored flowers – very pretty! Not sure I like old tires in a natural landscape, but I reckon the turtles don’t care, it attracts the sun’s warmth and is very easy to get on and off. š

Eliza, you are so right about the tire. The turtles saw me and dived into the water. Barely a minute later, one of them climbed back on and made sure I was no threat.

Dragonflies/Damselflies are one of my favorite insects. Your photo captured it so beautifully. Your shot of the bee in the hibiscus is great too.
And as always I like the flower pictures.
