The shot below is of the most colorful sunset I ever saw at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.

Like many of us, whenever I see a colorful sunrise or sunset I try to take a picture of it, if possible. Since the refuge is where I go most often to shoot pictures, in the past several years I did manage to have some sunrise and sunset shots from that place.

The following photo was taken 14 minutes after the shot of the pinkish sunrise I posted here a few days ago at https://neihtn.wordpress.com/2017/11/05/fall-at-the-refuge

Sunrise September 15, 2013.

In the shot below, the sun hid behind thick clouds, but as it plunged below the horizon it produced magnificent colors ranging from blue and purple to red and yellow.

To complete this week’s postings, here are two different shots of the sun setting on Chincoteague Bay. On the advice of a fellow camper, I took them this past Thursday from an observation point on Assateague Island National Seashore.

In a few hours I will be going to Viet Nam, the country of my birth, for about three weeks. During that time, I will not be posting or viewing and commenting on your posts. Until then, I hope you will enjoy the following shot of a glorious Grand Canyon sunset taken six years ago.

Moss Landing Sunset

Last week I went to Northern California, choosing Salinas as a center for several day trips to Santa Cruz, Moss Landing, Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur. These cities have some of the most amazing scenery on the West Coast, probably causing me to take too many pictures.

One of the places I liked best was Moss Landing State Beach, 26 miles south of Santa Cruz. I spent two late afternoons there, waiting for and finally, on the second day, photographing a very colorful sunset. The following photos were taken within a span of 16 minutes. By that time the beach was almost deserted, except for a couple of fishermen.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Vibrant

Vibrant is the challenge word: https://dailypost.wordpress.com/photo-challenges/vibrant/

I took the following photo at Grand Canyon National Park almost six years ago, when I started getting interested in digital photography. I had a new camera and had never heard of HDR or any of the esoteric terms that photographers like to bandy about. I just saw the beautiful colors as the sun was setting, and they kept getting better and more vibrant by the minute. So, I took the shot.

I showed the photo to a person who knew a lot about photography, and who said: “Very nice, but how do I know this was taken at the Grand Canyon?” He said I should have used HDR to get some features of the canyon walls out of that mass of black at the bottom of the image. Oh well, one lives and learns.

Today we went to Baker, a small town in Nevada at the entrance to Great Basin National Park. On the way we saw some beautiful horses grazing on a field near Ely, NV.

My apologies for not posting anything last week, and for not responding to your comments or visiting your blogs. I went to California for a short but very busy visit, and I hope you will enjoy the photos on this post and others to follow.

I took the following photos at the beach near Marina, CA, a town between Monterey and Santa Cruz, on the first day of the trip.

Sunset Before Snow

Yesterday, we drove on Wildlife Drive at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge as the sun was setting. The sunset was not terribly exciting, but as soon as the golden orb dipped below the horizon, the sky lit up in wonderful shades of vermillion, orange, yellow, and purple.

Today, we woke up to a light snow falling gently over everything, including our deck. This mourning dove sat on a rail covered with snow for a long time, probably asking why I had not yet replenished the bird feeder.

I have gone at least half a dozen times to the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge in late afternoon to try and capture a good sunset. Until now, nothing worked. Either the clouds were not there, or the colors unimpressive, or the sun simply kept itself hidden.

Yesterday, I finally managed to take the following shots. Please let me know which one you like. As usual, please click on each image to view it in full size.

Brigantine, photography, postaday, sunset

For me, taking pictures of a sunset has always been challenging. The advice from professional photographers is to be patient and to make sure you do not leave the scene when the sun goes down below the horizon. At that point most people go home, but the best colors come in the few minutes afterwards.

A couple of years ago, we went to Brigantine, NJ to catch the sunset. I walked on the beach, watching the sun go down and took a dozen pictures, most like this one below.

Brigantine1_MG_5883

They were okay but not great. I had expected better and more vibrant colors. Disappointed, I packed up, got back to the car where my wife was waiting and we decided to go home. I had to drive to the end of the island, just about 100 ft away, to turn around. By the time I began the turn a red glow coming from the rear window filled the inside of the car. The sky was ablaze in crimson and purple. I rushed to a spot on the back bay of Brigantine and spent the next 15 minutes clicking away for the most beautiful sunset that we had seen in a long time.

Brigantine2_MG_5909

Some people who have seen the photo above could not believe the colors and thought I had photoshopped them in. But they are the real colors of that day.

So the next time you take photos of a sunset, don’t leave too soon. Linger around even after the sun can no longer be seen. The best may yet to come after that.
