You need a macro lens. I am using a Canon 100mm f/2.8 mcao lens that I’ve had since about 1990.

M-R, dianthus is a genus that includes carnations, pinks, Sweet William. When I bought the plant, its tag said dianthus. It is probably a carnation as you correctly identified.
