Montana is a big state, and you can really feel it when your try to drive from one corner of it to another. A year ago today, I drove for almost two days from South Dakota to reach Glacier National Park near the border with Canada.
On the way there were miles and miles of ranches, fields, or just open country. To prepare for the winter, ranchers and farmers had harvested hay and piled it as cylindrical or rectangular bales. Their cattle, horses, and sheep would feed on those bales throughout the winter. Never having seen so many hay bales, I had to stop several times to take the following pictures.

Just commenting on your last post on the Badlands NP, our plan is to visit it on our way to/thru Montana and Glacier NP. I sooooo wanted to see Glacier NP but timing didn’t work out. When we had already changed direction and started heading south, I read 3-5″ of snow was occurring at GNP so we were kind of glad we didn’t go and travel in bad weather with our RV. Snow in August, crazy to most of us! 🙂

Last year, they had fire in August and until just before the trip I was not sure whether they would let us drive through Glacier National Park. Hope you will be able to see it on another trip.

They don’t call Montana the Big Sky Country for nothing, loved the way that you used the hay bales in the foreground to capture that!

Hay bales were so common on both sides of the highway, sometimes going to the horizon or until stopped by mountain sides.
