avocet, Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, hibiscus, monarch butterfly, photography, postaday, tiger swallowtail
Hurricane Isaias is only glancing at Florida and is headed to the northeast. Storms with strong winds (70 mph or 112 kph) are predicted for our area. Yesterday, I went to the Edwin B. Forsythe refuge and saw groups of shorebirds huddled together on the water sleeping. Maybe they flew away from the storms and were resting there?
There were many American Avocets that are usually rare in New Jersey.
Sand flies were also abundant and forced me to go home early. There hibiscuses and milkweed are in full bloom, and butterflies were flittering about.

Such stunning photos. I especially like the detail of the butterfly image. I wonder if the birds huddle together knowing the storm is coming. Or as you say perhaps they are recovering from flying away from it. Hoping you are safe and well and the storm not too damaging.

Thank you Sue! There were several groups of different birds like that. I think they were fleeing from the storm. If so the New Jersey shore could have only been a short rest area.

Thank you! The storm mostly spared us, and it had decreased in strength by the time it arrived.

Thank you Lynn! It was a good day, except for the flies. But they should be gone soon enough.

Thankfully, not at all. We did get a bit of much needed rain but that is a good thing. Glad you are safe and made it through without much damage.

I do wonder where the birds go in storms, the answer is clearly, somewhere else!

In the summer, storms drive birds north. In the winter, they drive them south.

Thank you very much! The storm was not too pleasant but on the whole we came out okay. Just a lot of broken tree branches.

I hope your home is spared any wind damage and your wild friends have ample shelter. While the rain is needed, the high winds are not. Stay safe!

Thank you Eliza! During the storm I had to go out and was in a parking lot for a while. The winds rocked my car from side to side, but it held on. Fortunately the storm only lasted for about four hours. We had a lot of broken branches falling off from the backyard trees, but nothing big. We also lost power for a few hours.
