The Sharp-shinned Hawk landed on a tree branch in our backyard, about 100 ft (30 m) away. It stayed there for a good ten minutes, allowing me to go get my camera, tripod, and set up. It was late evening on a cloudy day, forcing me to bump up the ISO to 1000, then to 2000.

Thanks, John. I have seen this hawk several times, but yesterday was the first time I managed to photograph it.

It is a handsome bird, but whenever it appears all the small birds disappear!

Yes, they scatter. A hawk got one of our male cardinals in April. The dog growled throughout!

Nice images. I was wondering if you could help me. I want to come down to NJ June 14-15 and go to Ocean City Welcome Center for the heron rookeries. I also want to see shorebirds and would like a suggestion on a place I might see many of them. Can you make a suggestion? We are also going to the Chincoteage ponies. I am guessing that is far from Ocean City, so anywhere in-between would be nice. thank you.

Donna, here are some places I go to: (1) Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge at 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, New Jersey 08205; (2) John Heinz NWR near Philadelphia International Airport; (3) Bombay Hook NWR at 2591 Whitehall Neck Rd, Smyrna, DE 19977; Blackwater NWR in Dorchester County, Maryland, USA. If you go to Chincoteague, Blackwater will be on your way, before you get to Ocean City, MD.

Thank you. I was planning on Bombay Hook and thought about John Heinz. I was never to Blackwater, so that might be interesting. I will let my friend know. I might give you the heads up when we are coming and where. Maybe you can stop in too. Being from SE PA, I miss being in that are as often as I used to be.

Blackwater is a great place and should be very interesting for you. There are Bald Eagles there, among other birds and animals. By all means, make a stop there for at least a few hours.

Dries, I think my bird feeder attracts the smaller birds. They in turn attract the hawks, and once in a while it can get bloody!

Thanks Katelon. I wasn’t planning for it, but it gave me enough time to take enough pictures.
