I took the following photos of Green-winged Teals at the refuge a month ago. They are the smallest among dabbling ducks, much smaller than Mallards. They feed by looking for vegetation in shallow water. The ones seen below live in North America. They differ from their Eurasian counterparts by having a white stripe on their breast. The Eurasian Green-winged Teal have that white stripe along their shoulders.

Aren’t those colours incredible! I don’t know that we have these beauties this far northwest. I’ll keep an eye open for them.

Canada is the breeding ground for these ducks, so you should see them in Spring and Summer, in their best plumage.

Such beautiful ducks! They are “winter birds” here, migrating and staying with us during the coldest and darkest months. Seeing their colours always raises my spirits as the winter months continued for a long time… Now, most of the green teals have moved on to their next destination. So, I am very happy to see them again here 🙂

Thank you Takami! Those that you see are probably the Eurasian cousins of these Green-winged Teals. Instead of a vertical stripe behind their neck, they should have a horizontal white stripe.

Thank you for the clarification Mr. Hien!
Yes, you’re right, the Green-winged teals that visit us are indeed the Eurasian “cousins.” Every now and then, the “North American” cousins show-up on this side of the pond. It causes quite the sensation! 😀

You should have them in your area. Those here don’t seem to be too shy of people. They just kept right on feeding, paying no attention to humans.
