On January 1st of this year, I went on a photo trip to the shore of Long Beach Island, NJ. As I was driving, at 7:24 AM a colorful sun rose to the East. I stopped by the side of the road to photograph it.
The sun was a fiery yellow and red, and I found the resulting pictures somewhat disappointing and did not want to post them.
Today I think perhaps nature was trying to let me know that turmoil was coming in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic was about to spread throughout the world and affect millions of people.

On the s1st of January we were still camping in the Kruger National park and enjoying a self-imposed news blackout, blissfully unaware of anything going on beyond our little wilderness bubble. These days I really long for that ignorant bliss.

I know what you mean, Dries. If only we could turn back the clock and start over.

If this photo doesn’t adequately capture what you saw then the actual sunrise must have been unimaginably beautiful. This to me is quite spectacular.

I often travel on that road early in the morning, and the sunrises are often spectacular, but this one was exceptional!

The glory of a sunrise or sunset is sometimes hard to record in photo, I’m guessing there is an emotion in it that the camera cannot compute. But I think this photo is superb, Hien, and I am so glad you shared it with us. Glad you pointed out the geese, too.

Thank you Jet! Those geese were honking as they flew, and it took me a few seconds to locate them in the sky.

Amazing fiery sunrise for a chilly morning – sometimes it is in hindsight that we see portents of things to come.

Thanks Eliza! I did not think about that sunrise until the pandemic was in full swing.

Beautiful colours. Camera don’t often “really” capture the majesty of a sky or vast landscape. If youve ever been to the Grand Canyon you will know that aphoto can never do it justice!

You are right of course, Emma. I have been to the Grand Canyon and my photos all turned out quite disappointing.

I dont think it is possible to “capture” the Grand Canyon on film or canvas.

Beautiful photo and sunrise. Sometimes what I’m seeing in person vs what shows up on my phone photo is very different. I use my editing options on my phone and that seems to bring the colors back to what I saw in person. It is disappointing though when it doesn’t show up the same. I assumed that cameras like you use would be more accurate. Your photo is lovely though.

Thank you Katelon! Sunrises or sunsets seldom appear on a photo the same way that our human eyes see them.
