I had bought four spicy (with added cayenne pepper) suet cakes for the birds and, as of today, the last of the four is on its way to being consumed by tomorrow. The birds did not come out much in our current 2022 big freeze with temperatures hovering around 8 °F (-13 °C). Here are some shots of birds enjoying (loving) the spicy suet.

Three European Starlings came at one time and chased away the Red-bellied Woodpecker.

These are great photos, and I still find myself surprised at how birds can enjoy spicy food 🙂 It is a bit fascinating, as I would have thought they like bland, earthy tastes like seeds!

Does the pepper discourage squirrels?

Unfortunately no. Squirrels eat that stuff too.

Stunning photography of the woodpeckers, Hien. They really look like they love eating the suet cakes. It is very generous of you to buy the cakes and put it out for them. The European Starling really looked like he monopolised the bird feeder – he has a pretty fierce look about him. Hope you are doing well over there in winter. It sounds cold. Take care 😊

Thank you Mabel! When it gets cold the birds really appreciate any food I can put out, while I thank them for sticking around when some humans move to their Florida winter homes.

Great set, Hien! I love seeing the woodpeckers. I looked for the Spicy Suet at my local Walmart but didn’t see any, I will have to try the local Ace. I’ll keep a lookout for it.

I thought the post title was the title of your new book, Hien. 😉 I would not have thought birds would like cayenne pepper. Show’s how much I know.

Lois, someone once mentioned that there is not enough spice in one of my books, and not of the cayenne pepper kind.

Nice photos, Hien. I wonder if the spice warms them up a bit.

It could be! But they also eat these spicy suets in the summer.

These are really excellent photos. I’m going to get a feeder like this and see what it attracts. My window feeder is good but it only attracts certain birds. I hope you stayed warm with that extreme cold snap.

Thank you, Tim! I received a window feeder for Christmas but have not put it up yet. It’s been too cold for that.

I one at the kitchen window. Another one is in my daughters’s bedroom where the birds seem to enjoy antagonizing her 2 cats. I think you will enjoy watching them up close.

It must be so fun to watch the birds going after their special treat!

It is! Especially when the smaller birds line up to wait for the bigger birds to finish eating.

Beautiful photos! Do some types of birds like the spicy better than others?

Thanks, Bonnie. The woodpeckers seem to favor these hot and spicy suet cakes the most.

I can’t even imagine what it must feel like to have weather of -13C, Hien. I’m amazed that anything, let alone birds so small, could survive that!

Dries, I too am amazed. I have to take my dog out and can only stay a few minutes outside in this kind of weather. Fortunately, today temperatures are in the forties °F.
