Barnegat Lighthouse was repaired and renovated in 2022 over seven months at a cost of $1.3 million. It was reopened last October but I failed to attend the ceremony. A few days ago I went there and finally took some photos of the lighthouse which looks like a new one both outside and inside.
I really enjoyed these photos of the Barnegat Lighthouse and the surrounding scenes, Hien. I’m always interested in the original lights in a lighthouse, specifically the Fresnel lens. I didn’t see the lens in your photo, looked it up, and read that originally there was a first-order Fresnel lens here (the largest made) and that now it is housed in the nearby museum. How wonderful. This lighthouse has been through a lot, it’s great that the community valued it enough to renovate it.
We love lighthouses. Looking out of our bathroom window we can see a kind of second church tower which is a lighthouse with one red light. Not far from us, in Happisburgh there is a typical striped red and white lighthouse.
Your lighthouse seems to be quite a slim one. Looks elegant but we wonder why there are not outbuildings. All lighthouses here have outbuildings. Since they are automatic now, those outbuildings and parts of the lighthouses are mostly used as holiday cottages.
All the best

I also wonder why this one has no buildings around it, at least one for the lighthouse keeper. Perhaps it was built by a military man who worried more about navigation then providing amenities around the lighthouse.
Portland Head Light is my second favorite! My husband and I were actually able to climb to the top. (It’s only open once a year.) It’s just down the road from Two Lights.

What splendid day you had, such a blue sky! I’m glad they preserved this monument to bygone days.

By the way, a private group donated a new beacon to this lighthouse, making it visible for 26.5 miles.

Thanks Tim! I will have to climb the lighthouse stairs again some time. I have only been to the top before its renovation.

It is, compared to the others that I have seen on both the East and West coasts.

My favorite lighthouse, Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth, which Edward Hopper immortalized in his painting, is looking decidely shabby these days.

At this point in time, Portland Head is probably easier to photograph than Two Lights.
